BRAMHA's CREATION
The Personality of Godhead instructed Brahma to create. The material world and the living entities were all already generated in seedling forms by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and Brahma was to disseminate the same seedlings all over the universe. The seeds of all the planets were impregnated in the lotus on which Brahma was situated.
The lotus was spread throughout the universe, and Brahma divided it into three divisions of worlds-the lower planets, the middle planets, and the upper planets-and later into fourteen divisions. He created all the fourteen planetary divisions for inhabitation by the different types of living entities. Then, he created the immovable entities, like trees and creepers, who are almost unconscious but have feelings of pain within. Then he created the lower species of life, different varieties of animals and birds, and then the human beings. His creation of the demigods is of eight varieties.
Brahma also created the nescient engagements like self-deception, the sense of death, anger after frustration, the sense of false ownership, and the illusory bodily conception, or forgetfulness of one’s real identity. Then he began another term of creation that was four great sages named Sanaka, Sananda, Sanatana and Sanat-kumara. He begot ten sons, including Narada, for the extension of the generations.
The four Vedas, which contain all varieties of knowledge, became manifested from his four mouths. The four principles of religiosity [truth, austerity, mercy and cleanliness] and the duties in the four social orders all became manifest. He also created the fifth Veda—the Puranas and the histories—from all his mouths. These are examples of his creations.

VISHNU DELIVERS GAJENDRA
Once the chief of the elephants, Gajendra, along with female elephants, went to enjoy bathing in the lake, and they disturbed the inhabitants of the water. Because of this, the chief crocodile in that water, who was very powerful, immediately attacked the elephant’s leg. Thus there ensued a great fight between the elephant and the crocodile. This fight continued for one thousand years. Neither the elephant nor the crocodile died, but since they were in the water, the elephant gradually became weak whereas the power of the crocodile increased more and more. Thus the crocodile became more and more encouraged. Then the elephant, being helpless and seeing that there was no other way for his protection, sought shelter at the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The King of the elephants was formerly a human being known as Indradyumna and he learned a prayer to the Supreme Lord. Fortunately he remembered that prayer and began to chant it. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Narayana, seated on Garuda, personally appeared before him and pulled him from the water along with the crocodile who had captured his leg. Then the Lord killed the crocodile and thus rescued Gajendra. Gajendra, by the mercy of the Lord, became one of the Lord’s associates in the spiritual world, Vaikuntha, and he received four hands. And the crocodile attained the body of a demigod.

When the great warrior Bhismadeva was lying on a bed of arrows, about to pass away on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra, he imparted instructions to King Yudhisthira on the subject of occupational duties. He also offered his last prayer to Lord Krsna and thus become liberated from the bondage of further material engagements.
Bhismadeva was endowed with the power of leaving his material body at will, and his lying down on the bed of arrows was his own choice. This passing away of the great warrior attracted the attention of all the contemporary elites and the great souls in the universe, namely the risis amongst the demigods, brahmanas, kings and sages. All of them assembled there to show their feelings of love, respect and affection for the great soul.
While Bhismadeva was describing occupational duties to King Yudhisthira, who had inquired him about the essential principles of various religious duties, the sun’s course ran into the northern hemisphere. This period is desired by mystics who die at their will. Thereupon that man who spoke on different subjects with thousands of meanings and who fought on thousands of battlefields and protected thousands of men, stopped speaking. Being completely freed from all bondage, withdrew his mind from everything else and fixed his wide-

Once, Visnu advised the demigods, who were defeated in battle by the demons, to execute a truce with the demons for the purpose of churning nectar from the sea. With the understanding that when the nectar was generated from the churning they would share it equally, the demigods and demons churned the ocean with the help of Mandara Mountain. The Vasuki snake was used as the rope for the churning rod.
When, during the churning of the ocean of milk, Dhanvantari, a partial incarnation of Lord Visnu, appeared with a pot of nectar, the demons immediately snatched it from him, but Lord Visnu appeared as the incarnation Mohini, the most beautiful woman in the world, just to captivate the demons and save the nectar for the demigods. All the demons became captivated by the young woman’s beauty and became attached to Her.
Taking advantage of their weakness in this regard, Mohini, the incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, got the demons to promise that whatever decision She might give regarding the distribution of the nectar, they would not refuse to accept it. She then had the demigods and demons sit in different lines so that She could distribute the nectar. She knew that the demons were quite unfit to drink the nectar. Therefore, by cheating them She distributed all the nectar to the demigods. When the demons saw this cheating, they remained silent.
But one demon, named Rahu, dressed himself like a demigod and sat down in the line of the demigods. He sat beside the sun and the moon. When the Supreme Personality of Godhead understood how Rahu was cheating, He immediately cut off the demon’s head. Rahu, however, had already tasted the nectar, and therefore although his head was severed, his head remained alive, and became the Rahu planet.
After the demigods finished drinking the nectar, the Supreme Personality of Godhead assumed His own form.

One day, when Krsna was herding the cows
with His friends, all of the cowherd boys became absorbed in sporting
and allowed the cows to wander into a dense forest. Suddenly a forest
fire blazed up, and to escape its flames the cows took refuge in a grove
of sharp canes. When the cowherd boys missed their animals they went
searching for them, following their hoof-prints and the trail of blades
of grass and other plants they had trampled or had broken with their
teeth. Finally the boys found the cows and removed them from the cane
forest, but by that time the forest-fire had grown strong and was
threatening both the boys and the cows.
Thus the cowherd boys took shelter of
Krsna, the master of all mystic power, who told them to close their
eyes. They did so, and in a moment He swallowed up the fierce
forest-fire and brought them all back to the place where they had
sported.
Seeing this wonderful display of mystic
potency, the cowherd boys jokingly thought Krsna must be a demigod and
they began to praise Him. Then they all returned home.

KRISHNA KILLING WRESTLERS
As Krsna and Balarama approached the bow, they were warned not to go nearer, but Krsna ignored this warning. He forcibly went up and immediately took the big bow in His left hand. After stringing the bow in the presence of the crowd, He drew it and broke it at the middle into two parts, exactly as an elephant breaks sugar cane in the field.
Everyone present appreciated Krsna’s power. The sound of the bow cracking filled both sky and land and was heard by Kamsa. When Kamsa heard what had happened, he began to fear for his life. The caretaker of the bow, who was standing by watching, became very angry. He ordered his men to take up weapons, and he began to rush towards Krsna, shouting, “Arrest Him! Kill Him! Kill Him!”
Krsna and Balarama were surrounded. When They saw the threatening motions of the guards, they became angry, and taking up the two pieces of the broken bow, They began to beat off all the caretaker’s men. While this turmoil was going on, Kamsa sent a small group of troops to assist the caretakers, but both Krsna and Balarama fought with them and also killed them.

The initial creator of the material world is the Supreme Lord Himself. It is said in Bhagavad-gita (9.10): “Only under the superintendence of the Supreme Lord does material nature appear to be the cause of all creation, maintenance, and dissolution.” He brings about the creation of Brahma, who becomes the subsequent creator empowered by the Lord.
Four-headed Brahma is the first living being. He took birth from the lotus flower generated from the abdomen of Garbhodakasayi Visnu, one of the three purusa expansions of the Supreme Lord in the material creation.
Before Brahma took up the task of creation, he prayed to the Lord for creative energy, “May the Supreme Lord be merciful towards me so that I may be empowered with the introspection to create, for I am also one of the surrendered souls who are dear to the Lord. I pray only to engage in His service in the creation of the material world, and I pray that I not be materially affected by my works. Thus I may be able to give up the false prestige of being the creator.”
Any person authorized by either the Lord or by His bona fide representative is already blessed, as is the work entrusted to him.

Jarasandha’s father was a very powerful king, but he had no son although he married two daughters of the King of Kasi. The King, along with his wives, left home to live in the forest for austerities, and in the forest he was blessed by one great rsi to have a son.
The rsi gave him one mango to be eaten by the queens. The king was very happy to see the queens bearing children, but when the ripe time approached, the queens delivered one child in two parts, one part from each of the queens’ wombs. The two parts were thrown in the forest, where a great she-demon named Jara used to live. Out of curiosity she joined the two parts, and the child became complete and regained life. She went to the king and presented him with the nice child, and the king was very pleased. The child was named as Jarasandha.
Since Jarasandha possessed demoniac qualities from birth, naturally he became a great devotee of Lord Siva, who is the lord of all ghostly and demoniac men. By his military power he defeated many small kings and arrested them to butcher before Siva.
Jarasandha became a great enemy of Krsna. One day, Krsna, Bhima and Arjuna together went to Jarasandha in the dress of poor brahmanas and begged charity from him. They begged him for the facility of fighting him, and it was settled that Jarasandha would fight with Bhima only.
So, all of them were both guests and combatants of Jarasandha, and Bhima and Jarasandha fought every day for several days. Bhima became disappointed, but Krishna gave him hints about Jarasandha’s being joined together as an infant. Thus Bhima dissected him again and so killed him. All the kings who were detained in the concentration camp to be killed before Siva were thus released by Bhima.

The sage Markandeya Risi had offered prayers to the Supreme Lord. Satisfied by his prayers the Lord told him to ask for a benediction, and the sage said he wanted to see the Lord’s illusory energy. The Supreme Lord Hari, present before Markandeya in the form of Nara-Narayana incarnation, replied, “So be it,” and then left.
One day, as Markandeya was offering his evening prayers, the water of devastation suddenly flooded the three worlds. With great difficulty Markandeya moved about all alone in this water for a long time, until he came upon a banyan tree. Lying upon a leaf of that tree was an infant boy glowing with a charming effulgence. As Markandeya moved toward the leaf, he was pulled by the boy’s inhalation and, just like a mosquito, drawn within His body.
Inside the boy’s body, Markandeya was amazed to see the entire universe just as it had been before the annihilation. He saw the sky, heavens and earth, the stars, mountains, oceans, great islands and continents, the expanses in every direction, the saintly and demoniac living beings, the forests, countries, rivers, cities and mines, the agricultural villages and cow pastures, and the occupational and spiritual activities of the various social divisions. All this he saw manifested before him as if it were real.
After a moment the sage was carried out by the force of the child’s exhalation and hurled back into the ocean of annihilation. Then, seeing that the child on the leaf was actually Sri Hari, the transcendental Lord situated within his own heart.

One day, when mother Yasoda was sitting with her child, Krsna, on her lap, she suddenly observed that he had assumed the weight of the entire universe. She was so astonished that she had to put the child down, and in the meantime Trnavarta demon appeared there as a whirlwind and took the child away. He was one of the servants of Krsna´s enemy, Kamsa, who wanted to kill Lord Krisna.
The whole tract of land known as Gokula now became surcharged with dust. No one could see where the child had been taken, and all the gopis were overwhelmed because He had been taken away in the dust storm.
Up in the sky, the demon, being overburdened by the child, could not carry Him far away, although he also could not drop the child because the child had caught him so tightly that it was difficult for him to separate the child from his body. Thus, Trnavarta himself fell down from a very great height, the child grasping him tightly by the shoulder, and immediately died.
The demon having fallen, the gopis picked the child up and delivered Him to the lap of mother Yasoda. Mother Yasoda was struck with wonder, but because of Yogamaya’s influence, no one could understand who Krsna was and what had actually happened. Rather, everyone began to praise fortune of the child’s being saved from such a calamity.

Working sanely and diligently, Devahuti served her very powerful husband, sage Kardama Muni, giving up all lust, pride, envy, greed, sinful activities and vanity. By following the strict vows of a chaste woman and after serving her husband for a long time, Princess Devahuti became very skinny, and therefore her husband became compassionate. He knew that she was the daughter of a great king and yet was serving him just like an ordinary woman.
Kardama Muni exercised his yogic power and instantly produced an aerial mansion that could travel at his will. When he saw Devahuti looking at the gigantic, opulent palace with a displeased heart, Kardama Muni could understand her feelings because he could study the heart of anyone. Thus he personally addressed his wife as follows. My dear Devahuti, first bathe in Lake Bindu-sarovara, created by Lord Visnu Himself, which can grant all the desires of a human being, and then mount this airplane.”
The lotus-eyed Devahuti accepted the order of her husband. Because of her dirty dress and the locks of matted hair on her head, she did not look very attractive. Her body was coated with a thick layer of dirt. She dove, however, into the lake.
In a house inside the lake she saw one thousand girls, all in the prime of youth and fragrant like lotuses. Seeing her, the damsels suddenly rose and said with folded hands, “We are your maidservants. Tell us what we can do for you.”
The girls brought Devahuti forth, and after bathing her with valuable oils and ointments, they gave her fine, new, spotless cloth to cover her body. They then decorated her with very valuable jewels. Next they offered her food containing all good qualities, and a sweet, inebriating drink. Then in a mirror she beheld her own reflection. Her body was completely freed from all dirt, and she was adorned with a garland. Dressed in unsullied robes and decorated with auspicious marks of tilaka, she was served very respectfully by the maids.
She and her husband then mounted that airplane and begot children for the righteous propagation of the universe.

KRISHNA'a APPEARANCE
When the entire world was overburdened by the increasing military power of demons in the form of kings, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krsna, appeared in this world. He came as the eighth son of Vasudeva and his wife Devaki in the prison of the demonic king Kamsa. Devaki´s brother Kamsa had prisoned Devaki and Vasudeva after hearing a miraculous sound vibrated from the sky which had announced, “Demon, Kamsa: the eighth child of your sister will kill you.”
In the darkness of night Krsna appeared in His form of Visnu, with four hands, so that His father and mother could understand that their son was the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The newborn child had very wonderful lotus-like eyes and He bore in His four hands a conchshell, wheel, club, and lotus flower. On His chest was the mark of Srivatsa and on His neck the brilliant Kaustubha gem. Dressed in yellow, His body blackish like a dense cloud, His wavy hair fully grown and His helmet and earrings sparkling uncommonly with the valuable gem Vaidurya, the child, decorated with a brilliant belt, armlets, bangles and other ornaments, appeared very wonderful.
Upon seeing the Lord in that Visnu form, Vasudeva was struck with wonder and offered prayers to the Lord, addressing Him as the Supreme Person, the Supersoul, who is beyond duality and who is internally and externally all-pervading. Devaki followed her husband by offering prayers describing the transcendental nature of the Lord. Fearing Kamsa and desiring that the Lord not be understood by atheistic and materialistic non-devotees, she prayed that the Lord withdraw His transcendental four-armed form and appear like an ordinary child with two hands. Then the Lord appeared as an ordinary child and was taken to Gokula, the home of Nanda Maharaja, out of fear of Kamsa.
